Alberta Health Services – Technology Services has an exciting opportunity for a senior Unified Communications Solution Architect with extensive technical expertise in IP telephone systems, distributed call center solutions, video conferencing systems, integrated healthcare communication systems, and desktop collaboration solutions to join the Technology Architecture & Solutions (TAS) Team. The TAS team is responsible for providing architecture and engineering services for a large, complex, multi-site, multi-vendor environment, supporting areas such as End User Devices, Unified Communications Voice/Video, Network, Compute, Storage, Database, Identity & Access Management, Cloud, AI, Security controls, and Facilities technology that underpin clinical and corporate service delivery. This is a 7-year temporary project-based position with potential for transition to permanent employment. The role requires both in-depth technical and strategic thinking, considering the complexity of AHS systems. Your experience in large enterprise environments will be valuable in designing and implementing complex solutions following industry best practices and agile methodologies to meet client needs. You will engage with stakeholders including senior leaders, service owners, developers, vendors, operational subject matter experts, and enterprise architects. Strong relationship-building, complex problem-solving, and effective communication skills are essential for success in this role.

The Unified Communication Solution Architect will be responsible for:

  1. Assessing current capabilities, identifying gaps, and developing strategies, frameworks, and roadmaps aligned with industry best practices.
  2. Evaluating and recommending Unified Communications technologies and platforms.
  3. Collaborating with cross-functional teams (vendors, network, telecom, app dev, infrastructure, cybersecurity, enterprise architects) to ensure system designs meet business and technical requirements.
  4. Producing system designs, specifications, architectures, topologies, and documentation, including security and audit controls, risk assessments, recovery routines, and contingency procedures.
  5. Leading or facilitating projects in areas such as Avaya/Nortel and Cisco IP Telephony, SIP trunking, NEC systems, MS Teams, Zoom, Tandberg and Polycom video conferencing, Vocera, Nurse Call, Building Management Systems, lighting, elevator/fire alarm interfacing, RTLS, and Call Centers.
  6. Working closely with operational teams to understand their needs and propose solutions to improve efficiency.
  7. Explaining complex issues and building consensus on technical and business solutions.
  8. Providing technical leadership and mentorship to team members.

  • Classification: IT Infrastructure Services 4
  • Union: Exempt
  • Location: CN Tower, with remote work eligibility within Alberta
  • Salary: $37.82 – $64.86 per hour
  • Minimum Qualifications: A technology-related degree or diploma, 7+ years of UC architecture experience, expert knowledge of UC technologies, familiarity with architectural frameworks such as CAF or TOGAF, and strong analytical and communication skills. Leadership experience in technical teams is also required.
  • Additional Qualifications: Experience with Avaya/Nortel, Cisco, NEC, MS Teams, Zoom, SIP, VoIP, video codecs, QoS, SBCs, UC security principles, network design, firewall policies, bandwidth planning, Tandberg/Polycom, Vocera, Nurse Call, BMS, lighting, elevator/fire interfacing, RTLS, Call Centers, relevant certifications (Cisco, CISSP, CCSA, GIAC, GSE, CEH, CIW, CCSP), and familiarity with standards such as HIPAA, CIS, NIST, ISO, SOC, and ITIL. Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) is also preferred.
