Description

Youth Support Workers assist clients in dealing with personal and social problems, administering and implementing various social and recreational programs. They also play a vital role in assisting individuals with daily activities and monitoring their health and well-being. They play a vital role in maintaining a home-like atmosphere and assisting in clients’ day-to-day activities, fostering an environment of safety, healing, and independence.

Responsibilities include:


  • Monitoring client’s health and well-being
  • Provide emotional support, companionship, and mentorship
  • Provide crisis intervention by safely utilizing de-escalation techniques
  • Maintain the living areas by cleaning, doing laundry, and shopping for groceries.
  • Ensure client involvement in meal planning, shopping for groceries, preparing and serving food/meals, and clean-up
  • Administer medications, and ensure safety by securely storing sharps, medications, and other hazardous materials
  • Provide transportation to medical appointments and transfer patients to activities
  • Perform CPR if needed, take residents on outings to interact with the community
  • Counsel clients living in the group home, supervise their activities, and assist in pre-release and release planning
  • Review client background information, interview clients to obtain case history, and prepare intake reports
  • Assess clients’ relevant skill strengths and needs
  • Assist clients in sorting out options and developing plans of action while providing necessary support and assistance
  • Assess and investigate eligibility for social benefits
  • Refer clients to other social services or assist clients in locating and utilizing community resources
  • Participate in the selection and admission of clients to appropriate programs
  • Implement or assist in implementing life skills workshops,
  • Connect clients to substance abuse treatment programs, behavior management programs, youth services programs, and other community and social service programs under the supervision of Family Services or health care professionals
  • Meet with clients to assess their progress, give support, and discuss any difficulties or problems
  • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment programs by tracking clients’ behavioral changes and responses to interventions

· Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Course a plus

· Must be able to relocate to Iqaluit

· Valid driver’s license a plus

  • Experience in planning and implementing/developing projects


Required training


  • Trauma-informed care, Medication administration, Suicide Prevention training, Informal counseling


Educational Background and Experience

  • Social Service Work (Diploma), Community Service Work (Diploma), or a Diploma in Child and Youth Work or equivalent work experience of 2-3 years
  • Knowledge of Inuit culture and experience working in Nunavut a plus
