Job Description

The Commercial Truss Designer is responsible for creating accurate and efficient truss designs for commercial building projects, ensuring compliance with engineering specifications, building codes, and customer requirements. This role requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with engineers, architects, contractors, and internal teams to deliver high-quality truss solutions that meet project timelines and budgets.


Working Conditions:

This is a full-time position with the working hours of 8:00AM-5:00PM Monday-Friday. The starting wage will range between $70,000-$80,000 annually depending on experience levels. Group benefits are available after a successful 90 day probation period and employee profit-sharing programs are available after 2 years of service.


Job Responsibilities:

Design & Drafting

  • Develop detailed truss layouts and shop drawings for commercial projects using specialized truss design software (e.g., Mitek).
  • Ensure designs meet all applicable building codes, safety standards, and engineering requirements.
  • Review architectural and structural plans to determine project scope and design parameters.
  • Provide value-engineered design solutions that optimize cost, efficiency, and structural integrity.

Project Coordination

  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and internal production staff to clarify design intent and resolve technical issues.
  • Communicate proactively with clients and project stakeholders to confirm specifications, changes, and approvals.
  • Prepare and submit design packages and material lists for production scheduling.

Quality & Compliance

  • Conduct quality checks on drawings and calculations to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Stay current with building code changes, engineering updates, and industry best practices.
  • Ensure that all designs meet Timber-Tech Truss’ standards of quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

  • Diploma or degree in Architectural Technology, Civil/Structural Engineering Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in truss design, structural drafting, or a related construction/design field (commercial experience preferred).
  • Proficiency with truss design software and AutoCAD or equivalent drafting tools.
  • Strong knowledge of building construction methods, structural design principles, and Alberta Building Code.
  • Mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural/engineering drawings.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a customer-focused approach.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to precision and quality.
