Fortis Mining, Engineering & Manufacturing is growing, and we’re on the lookout for a passionate, detail‑driven Senior Estimator, whose primary responsibility is preparing accurate estimates for custom metal fabrication projects. Working closely with the shop floor, engineering, and vendors, this role will ensure that all quotes meet customer specifications and align with Fortis’ standards of quality, cost‑efficiency, and delivery.

What You’ll Be Doing



  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for fabricated parts, components, and assemblies including materials, labour, and QA/QC

  • Interpret customer scope, specifications, drawings, and quality requirements

  • Source and evaluate material pricing and subcontractor quotes (e.g., steel suppliers, cutting, testing, painting)

  • Accurately estimate labour requirements for fitting, welding, machining, and assembly

  • Work with engineering and customers to develop solutions and estimate custom components

  • Develop and maintain standardized estimating procedures and reference tables

  • Translate project requirements into technical proposals and formal quotations

  • Define manufacturing steps and calculate run times in collaboration with shop supervisors and coordinators

  • Conduct time studies to validate and refine estimating models

  • Compile final quotations and submit documentation with supporting pricing and supplier details

  • Participate in setting competitive pricing strategies

  • Support the development of cost‑effective manufacturing solutions

  • Review post‑project actuals vs. estimates to improve accuracy

  • Maintain vendor relationships and source new subcontractors as required

  • Provide input during pre‑production planning and risk assessments

  • Maintain and update quoting tools and cost databases


What You Bring to the Table



  • Post‑secondary education or a tradesperson with industry experience would be considered an asset

  • 5‑10 years of experience in steel project estimation is considered a major asset

  • Strong ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and 3D models

  • Familiar with CWB, ASME, API, and ANSI codes and fabrication standards

  • Familiar with metal fabrication and welding processes

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong ability to establish and retain relationships with existing customers and vendors, as well as future customers and vendors

  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management

  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); ERP systems (e.g., Global Shop); CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD); other estimation software
