Have a passion for creative visual storytelling? Does reporting for emerging video platforms excite you just as much as does reporting for traditional broadcast platforms? Are you constantly thinking about the next original story you want to pitch?</p><p>CBC Hamilton is looking for a daily news journalist, assigned to work a range of shifts, including evenings and weekends.</p><p>You are a strong communicator who works well under pressure, is comfortable going live on air and can confidently break down a wide range of topics for the audience in a clear and concise way. You love telling the human stories behind the headlines, and love breaking news. You work well under pressure and thrive in fast evolving situations.</p><p>You will be expected to pitch regularly and deliver compelling storytelling on a daily basis. The work you do will be to deliver stories every day predominantly for video, streaming and live platforms, including YouTube, TikTok and FAST. Some digital writing and audio work may also be required.</p><p>You have a track record for finding meaningful stories that reflect the diversity and complexity of the greater Hamilton area and have worked to build contacts within its equity-deserving communities.</p><p>Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, practices and standards but initiative and independent judgment are required.</p><p>Above all, you thrive in a team environment.</p><p>Key Tasks:</p><ul><li>Contribute original ideas daily</li><li>Develop content including pitching, writing, researching, gathering, analyzing, reporting and presenting for the appropriate platforms.</li><li>Gather accurate stories in a breaking news situation and deliver them promptly</li><li>Write and package stories in a variety of treatments including live hits, social media posts, voice reports, script/clips, talk-tapes, debriefs</li><li>Prepare scripts for presentation; ensure adherence to style and format.</li><li>Decide which elements should be included in an item, their order, length, and sequence as well as the transition from one element to another</li><li>File from the field, using a variety of technologies including Dejero, iPhone, etc.</li><li>Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources within Hamilton's various communities and regions.</li><li>Contribute ideas or program content; participates in the preparation of station objectives</li><li>Identify and pursue leads and angles that push stories forward</li></ul><p>You possess:</p><p>Objective Criteria:</p><ul><li>Three years of directly-related experience that includes proven ability in the field and knowledge of digital and video journalism,</li><li>An understanding and awareness of issues, events and communities particular to Hamilton and surrounding areas</li><li>Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies</li><li>Ability to work flexible and long hours as needed</li><li>Understanding of the public broadcaster's role and responsibilities</li><li>University degree in journalism or equivalent</li><li>Valid full G or equivalent driver's licence Subjective Criteria:</li><li>Excellent reporting and interviewing skills</li><li>Proven experience in delivering breaking news on video platforms, both live and on-demand.</li><li>Superior critical thinking skills</li><li>Ability to synthesize complex topics quickly and work to deadline</li><li>Ability to write clearly, accurately and in a concise manner</li><li>Passionate about exploring Hamilton stories, issues and ideas</li><li>Creative storyteller who enjoys experimenting with different story treatments</li><li>Profound understanding of our social media platforms and how to engage and expand our audiences in those spaces</li><li>Proven track record ensuring a diversity of voices is reflected in storytelling</li><li>Contributes to the diversity of perspectives on our team, and has personal experience with pitching and producing stories on under-represented communities</li><li>Ability to work with a variety of teams</li><li>Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, tight-deadline environment</li><li>Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously</li><li>Self-aware; able to identify own growth areas</li></ul><p>Please include a link to your online demo or website, blog or video in your cover letter.</p><p>Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.</p><p>We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.</p><p>As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next</p><p>step will be asked to complete a background check.
