POLICORNER
About the job: POLICORNER is hiring a reporter for our new, Peel Region, subscription-based publication.
The ideal candidate is a reporter who will cover the local and regional politics of Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon – including next year’s municipal elections. You have experience with political reporting, can develop strong sourcing in all three municipalities and will thrive in a start-up-oriented newsroom. You have a deep understanding of municipal government and how it operates.
Most importantly, you’re sourced up, obsessed with breaking news and you’re interested in out-reporting the competition on the region’s politics, policies and personalities.
This is a remote position, but the successful candidate must be based in the Greater Toronto Area and able to have an on-the-ground presence in Peel Region when needed.
About the publication: Our new Peel Region-based publication, under development, is an extension of our must-read, Queen’s Park-based political newsletter. Read and trusted by Peel’s top political players, it will be an essential, deeply-reported read on the politics, policies and personalities in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon. The newsletter will publish every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7 a.m.
Responsibilities:
- Write and produce our Peel Region-newsletter.
- Cover local and regional council meetings, committee meetings, the mayors, councillors, and city leadership, the school boards, municipal elections and more.
- Conduct multi-media appearances, as appropriate.
Experience:
- A degree in journalism, political science or an equivalent area of study.
- One year experience in a newsroom is preferred but not required.
- Experience covering federal, provincial or municipal politics is an asset.
Requirements:
- A solid grasp of municipal and regional government – and their relationship with the province.
- Familiarity with the key players and issues at Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon City/Town Hall.
- A lively, conversational writing style.
- A record of breaking news and high-value enterprise.
- Ability to build up a strong sourcing network.
Compensation:
This is a contract position.
If you’re looking for traditional salary and structure, this may not be the role. We’re a startup – reader-funded and building from the ground up.
We’re pricing subscriptions at $25 a month or $250 a year. You will be compensated like a partner, not just an employee, through a percentage of subscription-generated revenue, commensurate with experience.
Along with your resume, cover letter, social media handles – including X, and two published writing samples, please include a one-paragraph response to the following question: What’s one under-reported political story in Peel Region that you think deserves more attention – and how would you approach covering it?
