New Employees require clearance from Employee Health, Safety and Wellness before they are able to begin any position within WRHN.</p><h3>Position Summary</h3><p>The Perfusionist functions in a highly specialized adult cardiac surgical environment. The Perfusionist contributes to clinical, education and research-based practice within the scope of perfusion science and the Cardiac Program. The Perfusionist provides patients with extracorporeal life support during open-heart and major vascular surgery in the operating room/critical care settings. The Perfusionist operates extracorporeal circulation equipment and prepares and administers blood products and prescription solutions through extracorporeal circuitry. The Perfusionist collaborates with the multidisciplinary health care team and integrates new knowledge and research into clinical practice. The Perfusionist also provides clinical expertise to patients and families, and to professionals internal and external to St. Mary’s General Hospital.</p><h3>Position Responsibilities</h3><ul><li>The objectives of Perfusion Services and the Cardiac Program will be promoted within the scope of perfusion science.</li><li>Operate the perfusion system and integrated circuitry to provide continuous support for the patient’s cardiac, respiratory, and metabolic systems for short- and/or long-term cardiopulmonary support.</li><li>Maintain physiologic parameters during cardiopulmonary bypass and collect, interpret, record, and manage physiologic parameters.</li><li>Select, assemble, and operate extracorporeal membrane oxygenation systems, left ventricular assist devices, right ventricular assist devices, selective perfusion circuits and intra-aortic balloon pumps; transport patients on extracorporeal devices as required.</li><li>Provide a comprehensive blood conservation program using blood salvage, autologous blood components, hemoconcentration, hemodialysis, rapid transfusion, modified ultrafiltration, and emerging technologies as required.</li><li>Support orthopaedic, general and other surgical services with blood conservation techniques and emerging technologies.</li><li>Respond to emergency patient situations 24 hours a day, year-round.</li><li>Assess, evaluate and revise cardiovascular perfusion standards according to evidence-based practice; develop and maintain resource material related to current practice.</li><li>Operate the perfusion system and integrated circuitry for cardiopulmonary support (including ECMO).</li></ul><h3>Assess Plan Of Care</h3><ul><li>Assess and plan interventions by selecting appropriate support equipment and extracorporeal circuitry based on patient age, weight, pathology and planned procedure in consultation with the cardiac surgeon.</li><li>Utilize perfusion knowledge to meet the physiologic needs of the patient; collaborate with the health care team to achieve excellent patient care.</li><li>Develop departmental objectives reflecting the mission statements of the department and hospital.</li></ul><h3>Educational Activities</h3><ul><li>Promote the objectives of Perfusion Services and the Cardiac Program; disseminate perfusion knowledge and clinical expertise to the multidisciplinary team.</li><li>Participate in the didactic, laboratory and clinical training of multidisciplinary staff; engage in continuing education by attending scientific perfusion seminars, presenting and publishing new findings.</li><li>Provide rounds and presentations for colleagues and liaise with national and international peers regarding perfusion practice.</li></ul><h3>Research Activities</h3><ul><li>Identify cardiovascular perfusion research opportunities and initiate evidence-based changes to clinical protocols based on research outcomes.</li><li>Evaluate new technology from industry to assess effectiveness and improvements in patient care; disseminate research findings through publications and presentations.</li><li>Assess, evaluate and revise cardiovascular perfusion standards according to evidence-based practice.</li></ul><h3>Administrative Responsibilities</h3><ul><li>Participate in daily organization and preparation of patient care plans and departmental workflow.</li><li>Participate in the departmental preventive maintenance program and manage daily inventory requirements.</li><li>Maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment; assist in data collection and align activities with departmental and hospital strategic goals.</li><li>Adhere to hospital standards, policies, and procedures; participate in quality management and performance-planning programs; participate in hospital/departmental committees.</li></ul><h3>Position Requirements</h3><ul><li>Graduate of an Accredited Cardiovascular Perfusion Science Program.</li><li>Current certification and ability to maintain annual recertification with The Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion.</li><li>Commitment to continuing education and maintaining recertification requirements.</li><li>Demonstrates ability to function confidently in medical emergencies and to deliver high-quality care with a focus on people safety.</li></ul><h3>Preferred Requirements</h3><ul><li>University degree in a related field.</li><li>Previous clinical experience as a Clinical Perfusionist.</li><li>Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).</li><li>Ability to function effectively under stress and make critical decisions in emergencies.</li></ul><h3>Application Instructions and Statements</h3><p>Employees of Legacy St. Mary’s General Hospital are required to submit their application electronically using Infor.
