Lead, Health & Safety – Hybrid
The Opportunity
Are you a strategic thinker with a passion for workplace safety and a strong understanding of occupational health and safety? We are seeking a proactive and knowledgeable individual to join our Health & Safety (H&S) team as the Lead, Health & Safety at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). In this role reporting to the Manager, you will play a key role in supporting the AER’s Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Program by promoting and maintaining policies, standards, and procedures that ensure compliance and foster a strong safety culture. You will collaborate closely with field staff and cross-functional teams to identify and address gaps, provide expert guidance on OH&S requirements, and lead the integration of safety practices into daily operations. What your day-to-day will look like:
Support field-level safety integration by engaging directly with field teams through site visits, field center visits, audits, and training to ensure consistent application of H&S policies and drive a proactive safety culture across all work environments.
Lead the continuous improvement of corporate OH&S policies, standards, and procedures by interpreting legislation, identifying program gaps, and integrating safety practices into business operations through training and subject matter expertise.
Facilitate, and support AER Health & Safety Committee meetings, communications, decisions, and follow-up on safety-related actions.
Provide expert guidance on occupational health topics including fitness to work, job demands analysis, substance use in the workplace, WCB claims, disability management, and ergonomics.
Oversee incident management and investigations, ensuring timely reporting, quality assurance, root cause analysis, and coordination with Alberta Workplace Health and Safety and AER executives for serious incidents.
Maintain legislative compliance through audits, procedural reviews, and the development of supporting OH&S documentation related to risk, hazard, and safety management systems, including annual program audits.
What we’re looking for in you:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Registered Safety Technician (CRST), and/or Certified Safety Auditor are considered assets.
7 to 10 years of related health and safety experience and preferably experience with OH&S legislation, policies, procedures.
Strong change management abilities, including excellent communication skills and a proven ability to collaborate and build strong relationships across the organization.
Strategic mindset with robust planning expertise, implementation skills, and ability to lead influentially.
Ability to adapt and problem solve for diverse, complex scenarios.
Additional Information:
All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
Pre-placement Medical and a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record is required.
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and First Aid are required.
This role requires approximately 50% travel, typically involving field center visits across Alberta for up to 1–2 weeks per month on average.
