Lead Backend Developer – Platform

  • Full Time
  • Toronto

The Judge Group

We’re looking for a seasoned backend engineer to take the lead on building the core infrastructure behind a high-scale platform used by some of the biggest brands out there. This role is all about designing and implementing clean, scalable systems that other engineering teams rely on. This is a hybrid role downtown Toronto.

You’ll be hands-on with architecture, code, and mentorship—helping shape the direction of our platform while keeping the codebase scalable. If you enjoy solving complex problems, writing solid Python, and building systems that other devs love to use, this one’s for you.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect and build backend services and frameworks that are reliable, scalable, and easy to maintain.
  • Mentor other engineers—review code, share knowledge, and help level up the team.
  • Stay on top of new tech and bring fresh ideas to the table to improve how we build and ship software.
  • Continuously improve performance, reliability, and scalability of our systems.
  • Collaborate with product, frontend, and other backend teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of backend development experience.
  • Strong Python skills—Django, FastAPI, and writing clean code.
  • Solid understanding of backend fundamentals : APIs, databases, system design.
  • Experience designing and optimizing relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred).
  • Familiar with testing best practices – can comfortable write unit tests.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills—you know how to guide a team and explain complex ideas clearly.
  • Comfortable debugging issues and finding root causes quickly and efficiently.
  • Security-aware—you write code that’s safe by default and know how to avoid common pitfalls.
  • Bonus : experience with Elixir or a strong interest in learning it.
  • Bonus : familiarity with CI / CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud infrastructure (GCP++)
