Job Summary: Reporting to the Technician Supervisor, Automotive Sciences in the School of Transportation, the position is responsible for the day‑to‑day maintenance and operations of our lab and shop spaces and will also deliver technical lessons in the lab environment independently, under the guidance of instructors, using existing rubrics and assessment tools to evaluate students.


Lab / Shop Responsibilities



  • Maintain and calibrate lab/shop equipment

  • Ensure lab security

  • Manufacture specialized items when required

  • Ensure work area is safe and clean

  • Liaise with other sections or programs when required


Inventory and Budget Control



  • Maintain consumables and inventory of equipment

  • Obtain quotes when ordering new equipment

  • Catalogue equipment manuals and technical literature


Instructional Support



  • Independently or team teach, deliver lab/shop technical activities/lessons

  • Evaluate students based on existing rubrics and assessment tools and provide feedback

  • Supervise students independently

  • Demonstrate lab/shop equipment

  • Prepare, set up and dismantle lab/shop exercises

  • Assist or perform demonstrations of equipment under instructional support

  • Ensure knowledge of related equipment including use and application

  • Assist instructors when required, ensuring safe and correct use of equipment

  • Assist in development of new lab/shop exercises


Student Support



  • Provide tutorial/remedial assistance

  • Assist students in developing and executing technical projects in cooperation with other staff members

  • Ensure students are working under safe conditions

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Strong oral and written communication

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong time management and organizational skills

  • Initiative and ability to work independently

  • Knowledge of computers and use of Microsoft suite of programs

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs unassisted

  • Ability to work flexible hours and assignments


Qualifications



  • Trades certification and/or related technical diploma and completion of Red Seal

  • 5 to 8 years post‑journeyperson completion

  • Class 5 driver’s license required

  • Forklift training an asset

  • Man‑lift training an asset

  • Fall arrest training an asset

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered


Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).


Remuneration: $59,603.44 – $79,497.34 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package (Classification – Instructional Assistant II).


This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
