| What we are looking for

Reporting to the Vice President, Chief Information and Data Officer, the Director, Enterprise Architecture role is responsible for establishing, maturing and growing the Enterprise Architecture function at Payments Canada. The Director is highly organized, self-motivated with an exceptional customer service orientation and experienced working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. This role requires strong executive judgment, including the ability to make high-impact decisions quickly and confidently, often with limited information and under tight deadlines and time constraints .



| A day in the life

Your responsibilities as the Director, Enterprise Architecture position include but are not limited to:

  • You will build a right-sized Enterprise Architecture practice that supports the entire Payments Canada mandate, from the payment systems to corporate and back office functions.
  • You will create and foster an architecture team that is viewed throughout the organization as trusted consultants and proactively engaged for advice and guidance.
  • You will establish a brand for architecture as enablers who provide practical and real-world solutions and guidance, not as ivory tower academics.
  • You will develop meaningful and accessible Enterprise Architecture artifacts such as standards, patterns, playbooks etc. Define and implement sustainable management practices supporting these artifacts to ensure they remain accurate, relevant and applicable.
  • You will set the Enterprise Architecture vision for Payments Canada; a practical, executable and flexible vision that directly supports the needs of our business, regulators, partners and members.
  • You will, in collaboration with partners, build the architectural target state and support long term technology strategy to support the organization’s evolving business strategy.
  • You will develop concrete architecture artifacts such as standards, patterns and guidebooks that provide real world applicability and value.
  • You will support a well-defined architecture governance model that serves to guide and facilitate the work of our business partners and project stakeholders.

Architecture Consultancy and Industry Support


  • You will act as a key liaison between technology teams and business leaders and partners.
  • You will participate in industry councils, working groups and consultancy engagements that further the Payments Canada mandate and help build our brand.
  • You will provide practical and objective advice to the leadership team in support of critical decision-making.
  • You will act as the architecture point of contact for our members both in project work and in ad-hoc engagements.

Leadership, People and Team Development

  • You will empower team members through guidance, coaching and prioritization of tasks that align with goals and objectives.
  • You will take ownership of Key HR activities for your direct reports, including performance management, talent development and planning, while fostering a positive and growth-oriented team culture.
  • You will develop, implement, and maintain a divisional strategy in line with the organizational strategy, designed to enhance or reliably sustain existing services over the longer term, and to proactively identify opportunities for new or amended services.
  • You will provide strong leadership to the divisional team, ensuring the necessary tools and support are in place to enable the team to be successful.
  • You will monitor and measure performance of divisional goals against Payments Canada’s strategic goals, as well as plans in support of the corporate scorecard.
  • You will build and sustain a high-performing team by attracting and retaining professionals with skills that align with Payment Canada’s strategic goals. You are responsible and accountable for all aspects of the talent management cycle (i.e., workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, staff development, succession) for the team, including developing group and individual development plans for team members to support a culture of continuous learning and development.
  • Providing dependable and articulate consultancy to the executive team and key internal/external stakeholders.

| What you need to be successful

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in computer science, software engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum ten (10) years progressive, broad experience in Enterprise Architecture spanning a variety of domains.
  • Minimum ten (10) years progressive IT experience in a broad range of disciplines.
  • Minimum of (5) year’s experience in a managerial role.
  • Knowledge of industry tools and organizations supporting Enterprise Architecture.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to create and tailor communications style from C-suite to line staff to influence stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Government of CanadaReliability Clearance and successfully complete enhanced background checks that may be carried out by Payments Canada.

| You will really stand out with


  • Certification in one or more key architecture frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman etc) is considered an asset.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset.


| Salary range

  • Based on qualifications and experience: $134,837 to $168,546.
