Vous fournirez des conseils environnementaux et corporatifs/commerciaux à Alcoa ainsi qu’à ses opérations et actifs partout dans le monde, en vous concentrant principalement sur ceux du Canada et des États-Unis. Vous dirigerez l’élaboration de stratégies de conformité réglementaire pour assurer la conformité continue aux lois et réglementations internationales, fédérales, étatiques/provinciales et locales, y compris celles relatives à l’air, à l’eau, aux déchets et aux milieux environnementaux touchés. De plus, vous conseillerez sur les questions commerciales et corporatives générales relatives aux trois principales installations d’Alcoa au Québec. Vous serez basé à Montréal avec un horaire hybride (à domicile et au bureau).

Vous relèverez du chef du contentieux environnemental et interagirez directement avec les autres membres de l’équipe juridique mondiale, notamment le chef du contentieux, d’autres avocats d’entreprise et conseillers régionaux, les directeurs d’usine et d’autres dirigeants d’Alcoa.


Ce rôle offre une opportunité de croissance unique pour internationaliser votre domaine de pratique et vous démontrerez une volonté claire de développer votre expertise en matière de droit et de principes dans les juridictions mondiales, en mettant l’accent sur les pays dans lesquels Alcoa exerce ses activités.

Principales responsabilités:

  • Servir de leader d’opinion et d’expert interne pour élaborer et mettre en œuvre des stratégies visant à maintenir la conformité environnementale et réglementaire sur les sites d’exploitation d’Alcoa, en mettant l’accent principalement sur ceux du Canada et des États-Unis.
  • Fournir des conseils juridiques commerciaux stratégiques et pratiques aux principales installations de production d’aluminium d’Alcoa au Québec.
  • Assister et conseiller le groupe d’audit EHS de l’entreprise dans son rôle visant à assurer la conformité continue aux exigences applicables.
  • Élaborer des stratégies pour gérer et traiter les responsabilités environnementales associées aux conditions existantes sur les anciens sites d’usines.
  • Élaborer des stratégies pour reconvertir les anciens sites d’usines
  • Diriger les diligences environnementales associées à l’acquisition ou à la vente d’actifs ou d’entreprises.
  • Diriger la négociation et la rédaction des conditions environnementales dans les accords d’acquisition et de cession
  • Coordonner la poursuite d’initiatives stratégiques, à la fois environnementales et commerciales, avec les membres du service juridique mondial d’Alcoa dans toutes les régions où l’entreprise opère.

Compétences essentielles:

  • Bilingue (français / anglais) puisque vous devez communiquer avec l’ensemble de nos opérations.
  • Souci exceptionnel et démontré du détail et capacité à gérer plusieurs projets hautement prioritaires dans un environnement très exigeant avec des délais stricts.
  • Capacité à conseiller et à travailler avec des clients internes d’horizons, de disciplines, de besoins et de niveaux d’expérience divers en matière juridique.
  • Capacités supérieures de conseil, d’analyse et de résolution de problèmes, avec capacité à gérer avec succès des situations et des problèmes critiques.
  • Adepte de la gestion des risques dans le contexte commercial plus large d’une société multinationale
  • Entreprendre, énergique et motivé
  • Excellentes compétences en matière de rédaction, d’édition et de plaidoyer oral
  • Capacité à gérer des conseils externes de manière efficace et rentable.


Qualifications:

  • Diplôme en droit d’une faculté de droit accréditée et actuellement membre en règle d’un barreau canadien ou américain.
  • Minimum de 6 années d’expérience pertinente, de travail dans un cabinet d’avocats, une autorité de réglementation environnementale et/ou en tant que conseiller juridique interne pour une entreprise multinationale et connaissance des lois et principes environnementaux canadiens ou américains.
  • Expérience de conseil commercial/corporatif pour les sociétés multinationales.
  • Une volonté et une volonté de développer une expertise supplémentaire dans tous les domaines de la gouvernance d’entreprise dans une entreprise multinationale.


About the role


You will provide environmental and corporate/commercial counsel to Alcoa and its operations and assets throughout the world, with primary focus on those in Canada and the US. You will lead the development of regulatory compliance strategies to ensure ongoing compliance with international, federal, state/provincial, and local laws and regulations including those pertaining to air, water, waste and impacted environmental media. In addition, you will advise on general commercial and corporate matters pertaining to Alcoa’s three major facilities in Quebec. You will be based in Montreal with a hybrid (home and in-office) schedule. 


You will report to the Chief Environmental Counsel and interface directly with other members of the Global Legal Team including, the General Counsel, other Corporate lawyers and Regional Counsel, plant managers, and other leaders throughout Alcoa. 


This role provides a unique growth opportunity to internationalize the successful candidate’s practice area and the successful candidate will be one who demonstrates a clear willingness to develop their expertise in law and principles in global jurisdictions, with a focus on countries in which Alcoa operates. 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a thought leader and in-house expert to develop and implement strategies to maintain environmental and regulatory compliance at Alcoa operating locations, with a primary focus on those in Canada and the US. 
  • Provide strategic and practical commercial legal advice to Alcoa’s major aluminum production facilities in Quebec.
  • Assist and advise the Corporate EHS Audit Group in its role to ensure ongoing compliance with applicable requirements
  • Develop strategies to manage and address environmental liabilities associated with legacy conditions at former plant sites
  • Develop strategies to repurpose former plant sites
  • Lead environmental due diligence associated with the acquisition or sale of assets or companies. 
  • Lead the negotiation and drafting of environmental terms in acquisition and divestiture agreements
  • Coordinate the pursuit of strategic initiatives, both environmental and commercial, with Alcoa’s global legal department members across all regions where the company operates

Essential Skills:

  • Fully Bilingual in both French and English
  • Exceptional and demonstrated attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple, high priority projects in a highly demanding environment with strict deadlines
  • Ability to counsel and work with internal clients of diverse backgrounds, disciplines, needs and levels of experience with legal matters
  • Superior consulting, analytical and problem-solving abilities, with ability to successfully manage critical situations and issues
  • Adept at managing risks in the broader business and commercial context of a multinational corporation
  • Hands-on, energetic, and motivated self-starter
  • Excellent writing, editing, and oral advocacy skills
  • Ability to manage external counsel efficiently and cost-effectively.


Qualifications:

  • Law degree from an accredited law school and currently a member of a Canadian or US bar in good standing.
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, working in a law firm, an environmental regulatory authority, and/or as in-house counsel for a multinational company and knowledge of Canadian or US environmental laws and principles.
  • Commercial/Corporate advisory experience for multinational companies. 
  • A willingness and drive to develop additional expertise in all areas of corporate governance in a multinational company.
