We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Breast Navigator to join our Medical Imaging team. This role involves supporting the daily operations of both the Medical Imaging department and the Surgical Breast Clinic at the Breast Health Centre. The Breast Navigator will triage and assist patients as they navigate between screening and diagnostic pathways, while also leading the development of new initiatives and educational programs. Our Breast Health is an accredited facility and a regional site for Average Risk, Assessment and High-Risk OBSP programming.

Employment Status: Permanent Full Time

Hours of Work: Day Shifts from Monday to Friday (may be required for off-site work/travel and weekend hours) – subject to change as per Management Rights

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to the day-to-day operation of the Breast Health Centre services in collaboration with the Medical Imaging Manager(s) to ensure patient care needs are met
  • Research new or improved technologies to continuously improve imaging services
  • Consult/collaborate physicians and clinical teams to develop and maintain a patient focused approach to Breast Health Center services for breast care and bone health.
  • Lead health care data collection and evaluation required by Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) and the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP)
  • Assist in the coordination of orientation and training schedules for new and current employees and students in collaboration with the applicable manager, charge technologist and/or clerical supervisor.
  • Assess staff learning needs in the applicable imaging modalities and provide staff with internal and external education opportunities and information for continuous professional development in partnership with the Clinical Practice Leader, Medical Imaging.
  • Provide consultation, training, and assistance to internal health care staff, departments, and external breast health providers, Ontario Health Team (OHT), local community centres and groups for breast and bone health.
  • Act as Breast Health Centre liaison with Clinical Practice Leaders to respond to questions, share information, and develop and maintain interdisciplinary and interdepartmental relationships with clinical teams (e.g., Medical Imaging, Oncology, Surgery), volunteers and support services
  • Maintain collaborative relationship with external agencies (e.g., Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP), Osteoporosis Ontario/Canada, Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR), Ontario Association of Radiologists (OAR))
  • Report OBSP wait times on a monthly basis to the CCO regional representatives.
  • Review quarterly/yearly CCO reports pertaining to OBSP metrics and indicators to identify areas for quality improvement initiatives
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all patients navigating the care pathways of breast imaging and requiring bone density screening and follow up.
  • Work collaboratively with the Cancer Care Program Navigator to support assessment, follow-up, and treatment referral processes for the patient’s care journey; and with the Fracture Clinic and Healthy Living Clinic to facilitate bone mineral densitometry exams for their at-risk patients.
  • Provide supportive care resources to patients and families to address psychosocial, practical, and informational needs beginning at the pre-diagnostic stage of care, through to diagnosis and subsequent intervention.
  • Serve as liaison with patient primary care teams (e.g., physicians, oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, primary health practitioners, and community agencies) to facilitate the delivery of patient care services
  • Represent and promote the Breast Health Center for events within the organization and in the community including presentations, public engagement, and educational training.
  • Assist in the coordination and promotion of quality assurance activities in collaboration with program Manager and Director:
    • Assist in the development and execution of quality improvement plans in collaboration with Oncology and Surgery programs
    • Monitor staff adherence to technical procedures; track performance alignment with current quality indicators (e.g., OBSP, Quality Management Partnership requirements, etc.)

  • Participate in mammography accreditation activities to maintain OBSP site status including coordinating physicist assessment results for submission alongside quality control reporting
  • Other duties as assigned, according to scope of practice

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Health Science and/or related discipline required. Candidates who are committed to complete and/or actively pursuing their Master’s will be considered.
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) required
  • Minimum of 5 years Breast Imaging experience, including but not limited to mammography and/or ultrasound in hospital setting along with 1 year of leadership experience required
  • Registration in good standing with Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT), Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences (OAMRS) and/or Sonography Canada preferred
  • Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) and Ultrasound Breast Imaging certifications are an asset
  • Certificate in Breast Imaging (CBI) designation as per the CAMRT (Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists) preferred
  • Experience in MS Office (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
  • Knowledgeable in the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP)
  • Demonstrate knowledge in quality improvement processes, data analysis, program development and adult education/teaching
  • Possesses critical thinking, problem solving, analytical, organizational, interpersonal, diplomacy, teamwork, conflict resolution and negotiation skills
